Characters which are displayed in the opposite way to other characters for emphasis (as black on white or white on black, when other characters are the opposite). This is often used to indicate you have made a selection or that you have control over a particular section of text. For example, in Microsoft Word, if you click once on a word you place the cursor at that point. Double-click and the word is selected - indicated by reverse characters. Click three times and the line is selected. Click four times and the paragraph is selected.
